What Are Bathing Suits?

These are the clothes we use to swim in pools, oceans, and other bodies of water. But why is this called “bathing suits”?

This name is a result of where it came from. This simple answer is that bathing suits were named after the English spa city Bath. But, this is an interesting question.

Many aspects of American culture can be traced back to England. The two countries have had close ties for many years because of their common language.

They were often incorporated into American lexicons due to the evolution of words and expressions in England.
The county of Somerset is in the southeast of England. The bath is there. It was here that the Roman conquerors of England built in the first century AD, and people began to flock to the area in the late modern period (15th-18th centuries).

The Romans built a complex bathing structure and temple in honor of Sulis, a local water goddess. This helped ensure that the settlement was remembered long after it closed down.

The spa was known as “Aquae Sulis” under Roman rule. This meant “waters and sulfur”. Evidently, “Sulis” was dropped from the name of this ancient watering spot after Christianity was adopted in the British Isles.

The name of the settlement changed over the following several hundred years due to different ethnic groups changing their rulership. In the Middle Ages, Bath was given its name.

It derives its name from the German word for “bad”, which means “bath”, and the Old English phrase “bare”, which denotes “the immersion of a person in water” or “a sufficient amount of water to bathe”.

Bath was rediscovered by fashionable people in the 18th century and made into a resort. Jane Austin wrote about the city in this period of its history.

The spa attracted wealthy, well-to-do people who “bathed” in the waters. They were dressed in what became known as “bathing suits”.

Based on the place’s name, “bath” or “bathe” became standard generic terms like Kleenex for facial tissue and Xerox to make a photocopy.

At this point, terms like “bath salts”, ‘bathing suit’ and “bath towel” were created. They were used in England but became part of the American lexicon.

What Is The Difference Between A “Bathing Suit” And “Swimwear”, Or “Swimsuit”

Difference Between A “Bathing Suit” And “Swimwear”, Or “Swimsuit”

These terms can be used interchangeably in Styling by the Sea, but they may be distinguished when used in another context.

Swimsuit – An item of clothing designed to be worn by those who engage in water-based activities such as diving, swimming, surfing and sunbathing. Some people associate the term with a woman’s bathing suit, but it is usually only a women’s bathing suit.

Bathing suit – This is a general term that can describe any clothing someone might wear while swimming.

Swimwear – This is also gender-neutral and is often found in department stores. It can also distinguish between other clothing types (sportswear, formal wear etc.).

Swimming trunks – This refers to men’s bathing suits. However, it is understood but sounds a little outdated.

What To Look For When Shopping For The Best Swimsuit?

Swimsuits Buying Guide

To begin with, you want to be comfortable in your swimsuit. It doesn’t matter how fashionable a suit seems on the rack; if it doesn’t make you feel your best, it’s not the suit for you. Choose styles that you would feel at ease wearing all day.

Here are a few crucial things to look for while shopping:

While some suits may be machine cleaned, others must be washed by hand. Swimming trunks may be hand washed to prolong their life, but machine cleaning is more convenient and delivers a superior clean.

Versatility: A revealing suit could be ideal for a day of sunbathing, but it’s not appropriate for beach activities. When you have a busy day, choose designs that provide additional support and coverage.

Swimsuit tops, like athletic bras, may feature built-in cups, detachable cups, or none at all. Cups are the best swimsuits for wide set breasts because they provide greater support and lift.

It is a matter of personal choice as to which style is the finest. When laundry, remove any detachable cups to avoid them being twisted.

Do You Size Up Or Down For Swimsuits?

Swim materials, in general, expand a little when wet, so if you’re in between sizes, it’s best to size down or stick to your standard size.

That is if you want to swim and get wet in your suit, which isn’t usually the case (lounging by the pool or wearing your bathing suit as part of your outfit are occasions you might not take the plunge).

Because the normal stretching process does not occur in the water, sizing up might help you feel more comfortable in fitted styles. However, this is mostly a matter of personal opinion; if you anticipate being wet and dry, keep to your regular size.
